The Wagon

For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry
Yippie yi Ohhhhh
Yippie yi yaaaaay
Ghost Riders in the sky
- Ghost Riders in the Sky, Johnny Cash

I wasn't sure exactly what the response to my missive meant, but soon it became apparent.

Stormraiders.

They have always looked so...dashing, flying on their brilliant shields. And now I had the distraction I needed.

Markus dived behind the prisoner wagon, and motioned for me to do the same. I think he was trying to protect me in some way. How sweet...in his own, lecherous manor. I joined him, and waited for the troops to fire before sneaking into the wagon, sure their eyes were no longer on me.

The first thing Laurie noticed when she lifted the tarpaulin covering the wagon was the overpowering stench of decay. She recoiled, taking a deep breath of the outside air and holding it, willing herself to not vomit.

She crawled into the wagon, clambering over the bodies of six soldiers who had fallen in battle against the Elves days before. They were covered in slashes and scorch marks; one had been decapitated, and his head now rested between his arm and his torso.

At the very end of the wagon, with assistance from the flashes of lightning outside, she saw a small humanoid figure - a gnome! - sitting in a rusty cage, his kneels curled up to his chest.

He looked up at her with a mixture of surprise and sadness, shaking his head as if to warn her away.

Laurie crawls over to the gnome, and investigates the cage. She whispers as she looks over the lock, "Who are you?"

Laurie leans in to examine the cage's lock. "No!" The gnome says. "Not safe!"

Too late.

Laurie feels a massive force slam against the side of her head before the world goes black (14 damage!).
